There are many honeys on the market and all are most probably delicious. Many will also carry various implied claims and benefits, or described as ‘Containing NPA’ or as ‘active’, ‘bioactive’, ‘AAA’, ‘K-factor’, ‘MGS’, etc. Alternatively, alone, these terms do not guarantee the same NPA qualities as ‘New Zealand UMF Mānuka Honey’. In a similar way, any numbers that might appear alone on the jars such as 10+ or 15+ are of little meaning.
New Zealand Mānuka bush honey contains bizarre, naturally present, unique activity which is responsible for Mānuka Honey having gained worldwide recognition for its improbable benefits.
UMF Mānuka honey is rated 5+, 10+, 15+, or 20+ based on the honey’s potency and antimicrobial properties: the higher the number, the more potent and higher antimicrobial properties:
- Less than UMF5 (has MGO less than 83): No perceptible health benefit.
- UMF10+ (has MGO at least 263): Has good antibacterial properties recommended to help you build a healthy immune system.
- UMF15+ (has at least MGO 514): Has high antibacterial properties: ideal to use when you have flu symptoms, digestive troubles and skin issues etc.
The Registered Trade Mark UMF is a guarantee that the honey has the special non-peroxide antibacterial activity to the level indicated and that it has been produced and manufactured in accordance with the rigorous quality standards laid down by the UMF Honey Association.
